[printable version]

The Max Planck Institute for Ornithology is an internationally renowned research institution with more than 200 employees working in three departments and eight research groups. In a joined effort, the departments of Behavioral Neurobiology (Gahr) and of Eco-Immunology and Migration (Wikelski) are inviting applications for

1 post-doctoral researcher in full-time

to study the neurophysiology of navigation in the homing pigeon.

We look for a colleague to study neural correlates of navigating pigeons by means of telemetric techniques. Homing pigeons are able to find home using olfactory cues, which they are able to learn.

The successful candidate will be highly motivated and work well both within a team and independently. Holding a PhD in science, you have a strong background in neurophysiology and an interest in behavioral biology. Technical skills for setup development and a driver’s licence will be advantageous.

You can expect a highly motivated international team and outstanding scientific environment. You have access to animal keeping and flight rooms in Seewiesen and at field site in Italy, as well as equipment for telemetric recordings, GPS-based localization of birds, and expertise in olfactory training of homing pigeons. Payment and benefits are according to the German TVöD depending on personal qualifications. There will be further social benefits according to the provision of the public sector.

The position is available immediately for a period of two years. For further information, please do not hesitate to contact Dr. Manfred Gahr: telephone: +49 (0)8157 / 932-276, e-mail: gahr@orn.mpg.de.

In an effort to employ more people with disabilities, the Max-Planck-Society specifically encourages people with disabilities to apply for the position. To increase the employment of women in areas where they are under-represented, the Max-Planck-Society also encourages women to apply for this position.
