PhD position in Cellular Neuroenergetics

You are interested in a better understanding of cellular metabolism in the brain, which for instance represents the basis for functional brain imaging, but is also involved in various neuropathologies? Than this PhD project should attract your attention. The aim of the project is to investigate neuroenergetic adaptations in auditory brainstem nuclei, which exhibit unique biophysical characteristics. Metabolism of neurons and astrocytes will be assessed by fluorescence imaging (NADH, FAD, ATP) and extracellular monitoring of O2, glucose and other metabolites/nutrients in brain slices of rodents (Brosel et al. 2018, Eur J Neurosci 47:222).
You will be part of the Division of Neuroscience (neuro.bio.lmu.de), a vibrant and diverse group with expertise in in vitro, in vivo, behavioural and computational neuroscience. Candidates are encouraged to join the Graduate School of Systemic Neurosciences (www.gsn.lmu.de). We are located in the Biocenter Martinsried (near Munich) in walking-distance to the Biomedical Centre and clinical groups of the LMU, Max-Planck Institutes, and the Innovations- und Gründerzentrum Biotechnologie, which allows for an extensive inter-disciplinary exchange.
You are an open and enthusiastic personality excited about science and research and you have a strong interest or experience in the following topics:
- Neuroscience & biochemistry
- Fluorescence imaging
- (Image) data analysis
- Writing analysis software (Python, Matlab, Igor, etc.)
- Stereotactical virus injections in the rodent brain
- Brain slice electrophysiology
Applicants must hold an academic university degree (M.Sc.) or equivalent in a relevant discipline (natural or life sciences, engineering, etc.).
