LMU confirmed as University of Excellence: A Milestone for the GSN

Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München has once again been confirmed as a University of Excellence within Germany’s national Excellence Strategy.

12.03.2026

The renewed distinction recognizes LMU’s outstanding research performance, strategic development, and strong support for early-career researchers, reaffirming its position among Europe’s leading research universities. Along with LMU, our cooperation partners at TUM were also recognized as a University of Excellence.

For our graduate school, this announcement is particularly meaningful. Founded in 2006 as part of the original Excellence Initiative, the GSN will soon celebrate 20 years of supporting outstanding graduate education, research, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Over the past two decades, our community has grown into a vibrant network of more than 550 alumni, 320 doctoral researchers, and 160 faculty members.

This renewed Excellence status highlights the strength of the research environment in which our graduate students and researchers work. LMU currently hosts seven Clusters of Excellence, spanning fields from the humanities and life sciences to physics, data science, and sustainability, among which are also our partners at SyNergy Munich Cluster for Systems Neurology. These interdisciplinary research initiatives create unique opportunities for doctoral researchers to collaborate across disciplines and engage with leading international partners.

As LMU continues to sharpen its international profile and expand collaborations, particularly within the Munich research ecosystem, our graduate school remains committed to its core mission: supporting the next generation of scholars through excellent supervision, interdisciplinary exchange, and an international research environment.

We warmly congratulate the entire LMU and TUM communities on this important achievement and thank our students, faculty, alumni, and partners who contribute every day to the strength of our graduate school, not only at the two universities, but also at the MPI Institutes and at the Helmholtz Center Munich. Together, we look forward to shaping the next chapter of graduate education and research at GSN.
