Further Information
Primary research focus: Molecular & Developmental Neuroscience
Second research focus: Biomedical Neuroscience
Keywords: neural stem cells, neurogenesis, brain injury, brain repair, direct neuronal reprogramming
Brief research description: We study the mechanisms of neurogenesis when and where it works - in development and adult neural stem cell niches - and aim to implement them when they no longer work - in the mammalian brain after brain injury or in neurodegenerative disease. This has lead to pioneer the field of direct neuronal reprogramming (Heins et al., Nature Neurosci. 2002). We examine molecular (e.g. Masserdotti et al., Cell Stem Cell 2015), cellular (Camargo et al., Nature 2019), electrophysiological (Petrik et al., Cell Stem Cell 2018) and systems (Falkner et al., Nature 2016) aspects of neurogenesis and repair.
