Brief research description:
Work in my group is primarily focused on multisystemic neuromuscular diseases. The focus is on repeat diseases such as myotonic dystrophies (DM) and facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD); nuclear membrane-associated diseases such as Emery-Dreifuss myopathy (EDMD); and glycogen storage diseases such as Pompe disease. Research ranges from genetic principles, molecular pathomechanisms and biomarker identification to translational therapeutic interventions. Cell culture model systems are established in order to evaluate therapeutic strategies. Specific cellular mechanisms being investigated are splicing mechanisms, cellular metabolism, changes in the nuclear envelope and cellular aging in the context of diseases.
